The electric guitar has actually been called on of the 20th centuries most important inventions. It is the one instrument that actually defines the entire character and sound of what we know as rock and roll music. This type of a guitar uses special pickups that take the vibrations of the strings and turn them into an electrical current. This current is then amplified and many times the sound goes through various different altering processes that change the sound. While this type of a guitar was first used in the jazz style of music, since then it has been used in a variety of other music styles, including blues, rock and roll music, and even country music. Today there are a variety of different types of electric guitars, so let’s take a closer look at the most common types of electric guitars that you’ll find today.

Electric Guitar Type #1 – Solid Body Electric Guitars – One of the more popular types of electric guitar are the solid body electric guitars. These guitars have no holes in them at all and there is no cavity on the inside that helps to accommodate vibration, like what is used in acoustic guitars to help amplify the sound. Usually they are made out of some type of hard wood, and they are coated with a lacquer. They come with six strings of steel, and the wood used for them is dried out for 306 months before it is cut into the guitar shape. The pickups on these guitars are what amplify the sound of them. The first company out there to produce mass productions of these guitars was Fender.

Electric Guitar Type #2 – Hollow Body Electric Guitars – These types of electric guitars are another type of guitar out there and they do have a hollow body and pickups are used on them to help amplify the sound. They work in much the same way that solid body guitars do, but since the body is hollow, the pickups on the guitar pick up the body vibration and the string vibration.

Electric Guitar Type #3 – Semi Hollow Body Electric Guitars – Another type of electric guitars out there today are semi hollow body electric guitars. These guitars are somewhere in between hollow body guitars and solid body guitars and they supposedly provide even better resonance that the solid body guitars and they are much lighter as well. While they usually have close to the same form that solid body guitars have, they can have one or two sound holes in them as well.

Electric Guitar Type #4 – Metal Body Electric Guitars – While metal body electric guitars are not so common, they do have special acoustic qualities. They are made to play just like a solid body guitar. The bodies of these guitars are usually made out of aluminum and they are often plated in gold or chrome. Often they have special holes in them which help to relive the weight of the guitar and they don’t affect the sound in any negative way.
